Waterloo station stone

Waterloo Station

Waterloo is the UK's largest train station, covering an area of 24.5 acres. One of its most notable features is the Victory Arch, built of Portland Stone. This commemorates the London and South Western and the Southern Railway men who gave their lives in the First and Second World Wars.

G&O Stone was appointed to replace and upgrade the Portland Stone steps - including the inclusion of a black granite transition strip. We also restored some of the surrounding stone work walls and landings.

Due to the station being live at the time of the works, they had to be undertaken in three phases to maintain access through to the station. To make this achievable, we had to use a spider crane on the mid landing to lift the stone steps into place and install them during engineering hours.

This was G&O Stone's first major job and the client was very happy with the outcome.
